1st Team Match Report - Lancaster Home
Morecambe kept up their recent dominance (last 15 years) over 3rd from bottom Lancaster with a rain affected winning draw on Monday.
After being inserted by the Lancaster captain, a negative ploy which was to continue throughout the afternoon, Morecambe made a good start with the openers Vish and Woody. When the rains came at 25 overs Morecambe had moved to 85 for 3, a position from which a decent total was expected. Unfortunately due to the rain, when play re-started only 8 more overs were available. In their chase for quick runs the Morecambe batsmen collasped to a score of 127 for 9.
On one of the flatest pitches of the year, and Lancaster having 33 overs to chase 127, the team was up against it. A wicket in the first over Heywood Jnr bowled by Gaz, and in then with the score on 18 Stevens was given out LBW to Johno.
A good partnership between Tim Barry and Ryan Nelson, took Lancaster to a position where they could be the only winners of the match, when Barry was out and then Walling the score was 98 for 4 with 3 overs remaining.
With 6 wickets left, a short leg side boundary, a big hitting pro to come in next, the game was there for Lancaster's taking. Unfortunately for them their captain Heywood snr had other ideas, in his continued quest to try to stop Morecambe being the premier club in the region, he thought it better to stop us getting a 5th wicket and a bonus point, than actually concerntrating on winning the game for Lancaster. He brought himself into bat and proceeded to bore everyone for the next 3 overs, instead of what could have been an exciting finish. We can only feel sorry that it means so much to stop Morecambe to the detriment of his own club. We also felt sorry for young Ryan Nelson whose innings deserved more than this outcome.
Still with other results Morecambe are now 1 point off new leaders Kendal, with 3 games to go in what promises to be one of the best league finishes in years, with four teams still involved.
We wish Lancaster well with their battle for staying off the bottom of the table.
